The Street Department is responsible for maintaining the public thoroughfares for safe and comfortable travel throughout Mexia.

Activities of this department include the maintenance of over 40 miles of paved streets, 3 miles of unpaved streets, the cleaning of the drainage ditches abutting City streets, maintaining storm drains, brush chipping, street sweeping, and demolition of dilapitated houses.  In addition to maintenance, this department has increased its activities to rebuilding deteriorated streets through both a cement stabilization procedure and a more traditional method of adding and stabilizing the road base.  The Street Department is acquiring the equipment and experience to resurfacing the streets as well as utilizing preventative maintenance procedures to prolong pavement life.

 This department funds 11 full-time hourly positions, including 4 Heavy Equipment Operators (2 are shown as Foremen), 3 Light Equipment Operators, 2 Truck Drivers, and 2 Laborers.  Direction of the Street Department is provided by the Public Works Director (funded elsewhere).
